Archaeologists have managed to trace oats back to around 2,000 BC, although it wasn’t eaten like we eat it today. It was considered a rancid form of wheat and often used as animal food. The mind set changed over time and oats was used for medicinal purposes. It then became popular in Germany, Scandinavia, Scotland and Ireland. It was the Scots that brought oats to America in the 17th century. These days you get oat groats, rolled oats, crushed oats, steel-cut oats and instant oats. Today we look at the amazing things that oats can do to your body.

9 - Night night…
Society has led us to believe that oats is purely for breakfast, but here’s another suggestion that might make you reconsider that heavy meal you usually devour dinner time. Have a bowl of oats. The Scottish enjoy their oats in the evening too, as it makes them feel nice and sleepy. You’re probably wondering why then is it good in the morning for energy, but the good stuff also contains melatonin, which if you’ve ever taken to help you sleep, you’ll know you take it at night time just before you sleep, and it works wonders.

Eating oats on a regular basis also promotes good vision. Oats contains Vitamin A which is crammed with antioxidant compounds. These assist with bone formation, they help the immune system and are beneficial for excellent vision. Vitamin A protects the cornea of the eye by creating a barrier against bacteria and viruses which lead to eye infections. It also helps with dry eyes and decreases the risk of macular degeneration or vision loss.

Eating oats is a great way to assist your body in its haemoglobin formation. Oats contains iron which is essential for this to happen. Haemoglobin is a red protein that transports oxygen in the blood throughout the body and takes CO2 from the tissues to the lungs. If you don’t have enough of the stuff, it’s also a huge a health risk.

6 - A bone to pick with you…
It’s so easy to quickly eat a bowl of oats, so make no bones about it and just do it and by doing so you will promote healthy bones in your body. Steel cut oats should be your first choice, as they have less air exposure and are ever so slightly healthier. Oats contains silicon which plays an important role in bone formation and the maintenance thereof. This silicon also assists in the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis.

5 - Bulk Up…
If you’re hoping to build a little extra muscle mass, oats are your answer! Start your day off with a bowl of steel-cut oats, which taking into account all the good stuff we’ve already mentioned, helps to preserve muscles during workouts. Oats gives you that extra protein, energy, is low in fat and full of natural goodness – all the things that those wanting to bulk up could need in a food!

4 - A little balance…
Oats has become known for helping to balance oestrogen. By simply adding a bowl of oats to your diet, you could potentially eliminate excess or unnecessary hormones.
