Every year scientists are making huge advancements in so many different areas, it’s hard to keep track of all of them. Today we’re going to highlight some of their incredible achievements over the last couple of years.

11 - Land before time…
Homo Sapiens were thought to have originated from Africa around 200,000 years ago. However, a fairly recent discovery has blown that theory out of the water. Scientists have discovered 5 new specimens believed to be around 100,000 years earlier than originally thought!

10 - Time to stop…
Quitting drinking is one of the hardest things to do, and even if you have a great support system, and go to all the right meetings, it can still feel like it’s not possible. Extensive studies on light, moderate and heavy drinkers, found that those who drank a lot less had a variation in their genes. Mice that were given this hormone showed signs of opting to drink water as opposed to alcohol. With that knowledge, scientists have developed a pill that will really help binge drinkers beat the bottle. This is definitely something positive to come out of recent scientific discoveries!

9 - Just call me Zuul…
Over in Toronto, scientists discovered a new kind of dinosaur that they named Zuul, which is the name given to the doglike monster in the movie, Ghostbusters. Zuul was quite a scary looking creature, and this dinosaur seems to be following suit. Horns behind the eyes, spikes on the face, and a hammer like tail packed with barbs are all the makings of a monster! The skeleton was dug up in Montana and is in such amazing condition with even the skull and tail intact.

8 - Careless whisper…
It’s been a long time that scientists have studied the relationship between blue whales and their calves, and they’ve been puzzling over how the mom and her baby communicate with each other as there’s no audible sound between them. Turns out they have been whispering to each other the whole time.

7 - Time to sniff out the truth…
Ever wondered what Uranus smells like? I mean with a name like Uranus, you kind of have to wonder if it smells similar to the real deal. Turns out, it smells even worse! Uranus is said to smell like the worst fart you’ve ever encountered or rotten eggs! The reason the icy planet has such a strong odor is because of the presence of hydrogen sulfide.

6 - Frog in your throat…
The slime of this particular frog could get rid of that! Scientists have discovered that the slime from a specific frog from southern India has antimicrobial peptides which can destroy bacteria and viruses, including flu while still protecting your normal cells. They’re still testing things out in the lab, but quirky discovery none the less.

5 - Warrior Princess…
A Viking warrior had been unearthed, buried with accessories like arrows and swords and it was always assumed that it was the body of a male. However, new DNA analysis confirm our Viking warrior is a woman! It definitely makes you think how different the history books should be written. The remains were uncovered on the island of Björkö, in Sweden.

4 - A step in the right direction…
The National Institute of Health have recently informed us that they’ve discovered a new molecular mechanism that might be the root cause of severe premenstrual syndrome. Women who struggle with this have a difference in their molecular biology, and researchers have worked on this problem by turning off the estrogen and progesterone in test subjects. By doing this, the symptoms disappeared in all their subjects. They’re currently working on a new treatment to help women who suffer with this.

3 - Tummy Time…
A team at MIT and Brigham and Women’s Hospital have invented a small voltaic cell that functions using the fluids in your stomach. This could mean that power sensors could stay in your body for an indefinite amount of time, monitoring your vital signs or delivering life-saving drugs. Sensors such as these are usually powered by small batteries, posing a safety risk and potentially running out of power.

2 - Tip of the iceberg…
You’ve heard of the word iceberg, but have you heard of the word fatberg? Fatbergs are disastrous things, basically massive clumps of non-biodegradable products, like wet wipes, oil and anything that’s clogging the sewers. There was a massive one causing huge problems in London, but they’ve done the most incredible thing and turned it into biodiesel! This particular fatberg is going to make 2,000 gallons of fuel – remarkable achievement, isn’t it?
